Diarrhea, reduced appetite, and nervousness were observed following oral exposure of six pigs to freeze-thaw extract and living culture of E. coli strain 0139:K82:H1.
The most significance gross change was the appearance of subserosal edema of the mesentry, especially of the mesocolon.
Histological findings included perivascular edema of the brain and reticulum cells as well as lymphocytic aggregates in the renal cortex simulating early neoplasia. Edema of the submucosa of gallbladder, the duodenum, the spiral colon and the fundic stomach as well as the lymph nodes was also observed.
The syndrome which was produced resembled, in many aspects, edema disease although some complicating factors were ob-
The present study sought to quantitatively examine mucosal inflammatory and immune responses in dogs with gastritis and the relationship of these responses to infection with Helicobacter. Gastric biopsies from 30 dogs were evaluated for B- and T-lymphocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, macrophages, and mast cells. Mucosal atrophy, fibrosis, cellularity, and severity of gastritis were graded qualitatively. Messenger-RNA (mRNA) for actin, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-4, IL-8, and IL-10, transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), and interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) was quantified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The presence of Helicobacter spp. was determined by urease activity, histology, PCR, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. mRNA for IL-1beta, IL-8, IL-10, TGF-beta, and IFN-gamma was detected in most dogs. IL-4 mRNA was detected in only 1 dog. Correlations were observed for IL-1beta versus IL-8 and IL-10; IL-8 versus IL-10, IFN-gamma, and TGF-beta; and IL-10 versus IFN-y. Mucosal pathology was related to cytokine mRNA expression (neutrophils to IL-8 and IFN-gamma, macrophages and lymphocytes to IFN-gamma, and fibrosis to IL-1beta). Gastritis was categorized as lymphoplasmacytic in all dogs, and its histologic severity correlated with atrophy, infiltration with lymphocytes and macrophages, and expression of IL-10 and IFN-gamma. Of the dogs examined, 76.7% were infected with Helicobacter spp. Infection was associated with increased expression of TGF-beta and fibrosis. Circulating anti-Helicobacter immunoglobulin G titers were higher in uninfected than infected dogs. We conclude that lymphoplasmacytic gastritis in dogs is characterized by concurrent activation of proinflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokines, with increased mRNA expression related to mucosal pathology. No significant associations between Helicobacter infection and proinflammatory cytokine expression, severity of gastritis, or differences in the pathogenicity of different Helicobacter spp. were found. 相似文献
A 5-year-old, female neutered, Australian Kelpie presented with a 2-month history of dramatic bilateral erythematous thickening of the third eyelids. Ophthalmic examination demonstrated raised, pink to red, irregular thickening of the entire palpebral surface of both third eyelids. There were no other ocular abnormalities. A surgical biopsy was taken from each third eyelid. Histopathologic examination revealed sheets of macrophages, plasma cells, lymphocytes, and occasional fibroblasts and neutrophils infiltrating the third eyelid stroma. A diagnosis of chronic granulomatous conjunctivitis was made. Grossly and histopathologically this case closely resembles previously described cases of nodular granulomatous conjunctivitis involving the third eyelids of Collie dogs. This report describes an unusual case of nodular granulomatous conjunctivitis isolated to the third eyelids in an Australian Kelpie. Resolution of the condition was achieved with a combination of oral doxycycline, niacinamide and prednisolone. 相似文献
A 10-year-old neutered male Persian cat and a 4-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair (DSH) cat were evaluated for acute-onset severe lateralising tetraparesis and hemiplegia, respectively. Both cats also had left-sided Horner's syndrome. Neurological examination of the cats localised the lesion to cranial to C5 in the Persian and the left cervical intumescence (C6-T2) in the DSH. Physical examinations were otherwise generally unremarkable. Routine laboratory tests and spinal radiography were normal for the Persian cat and were not performed for the DSH cat. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tap was attempted for the Persian cat but aborted because of gross blood contamination, and was not performed for the DSH cat. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the Persian cat revealed a lesion within the spinal parenchyma at segments C1 to C3 (slightly more left-sided) which was iso- to hypointense on T1-weighted scans and hyperintense on T2-weighted scans, and which enhanced slightly with gadolinium. MRI of the DSH cat revealed a lesion within the spinal parenchyma at segment C7 (predominantly left-sided) which was hypointense on T1-weighted scans and hyperintense on T2-weighted gradient echo scans. Contrast was not administered. The MRI findings in both cases were highly suggestive of acute spinal cord infarction, based upon comparison to human cases. Both cats made full neurological recoveries with supportive treatment only. This paper describes two cases of suspected acute spinal cord infarction in the cat, demonstrates the potential diagnostic value of MRI, and discusses the clinical syndrome of this condition with a brief review of published cases. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To compare laparoscopic dissection with-laparoscopic dissection combined with abdominal instillation of ferric hyaluronate gel for the treatment of experimentally induced adhesions in pony foals. ANIMALS: 12 healthy pony foals. PROCEDURE: A serosal abrasion method was used to create adhesions at 4 sites on the jejunum (day 0). At day 7 laparoscopy was performed and the adhesions observed in each foal were recorded. In group-1 foals (n = 6), the adhesions were separated laparoscopically (treatment 1). In group-2 foals (n = 6), 300 mL of 0.5% ferric hyaluronate gel was infused into the abdomen after the adhesions were separated laparoscopically (treatment 2). At day 24, terminal laparoscopy was performed and the adhesions observed were recorded. Total number of adhesions within each group was compared between day 7 and 24. Data were analyzed to determine whether an association existed between the number of adhesions on day 24 and treatment type. RESULTS: At day 24, the number of adhesions was significantly decreased within each group, compared with the number of adhesions at day 7 (group-1 foals, 10 vs 22 adhesions; group-2 foals, 3 vs 20 adhesions). Treatment 1 was associated with a significantly higher number of adhesions at day 24, compared with treatment 2 (odds ratio, 4.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.03 to 23.02). CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Abdominal instillation of 0.5% ferric hyaluronate gel after laparoscopic dissection was a more effective technique than laparoscopic dissection alone to treat experimentally induced adhesions in pony foals. Laparoscopic adhesiolysis following abdominal surgery in foals is a safe and effective technique. 相似文献
1. The interactions between fat type and xylanase supplementation of rye‐based diets were investigated using a 2 × 2 factorial design in which a rye‐based diet (610 g rye/kg) was combined with 100 g/kg of soya oil or beef tallow, with and without xylanase supplementation at 3000 IU/kg, and fed to 1‐d‐old male broilers. Food passage time, viscosity of digesta supernatant, xylanase activity and pH in different segments of the digestive tract were examined.
2. Food passage throughout the digestive tract was accelerated by enzyme addition regardless of fat type. The time taken for 50% of the marker to be excreted was reduced from 8.4 to 6.7 h in animals receiving the rye‐soya oil diets and from 8.0 to 6.9 h with the rye‐tallow diets.
3. Viscosity in the supernatant of the jejunal and ileal digesta was markedly decreased after enzyme addition. Viscosities were generally higher in the ileal than in the jejunal supernatant, and fell as the birds aged from 14 to 28 d. The effect of enzyme was also reduced in older chicks. There was not a clear effect of the fat source on viscosity.
4. Xylanase activity was still found at the end of the ileum in digesta of birds fed on the enzyme‐supplemented diets but not in control animals. Xylanase activity was also detected in the caeca of all groups.
5. Significantly lower pH values were found in tallow‐fed birds in some segments of the digestive tract. A significant increase in pH after enzyme addition was detected in the proximal ileum; this was independent of fat source. 相似文献
Absorbed thyroid dose and effective half-life were determined in 46 hyperthyroid cats after treatment with a low dose (mean 111MBq) of radioiodine intravenously. Thirteen of these cats had received iohexol for glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measurement within 24h before treatment with radioiodine in view of another ongoing study at our institution. Pre-therapy values were obtained for total thyroxine (TT(4)) and for the thyroid to salivary gland ratio with sodium pertechnetate gamma-camera imaging. All cats underwent post-therapy scans at 24, 48 and 120 h for evaluation of radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) and the effective half-life of radioiodine. The absorbed dose was calculated from the cumulative activity with Olinda software. Both groups were comparable in age, TT(4) and the ratio of thyroid activity to salivary gland activity. Statistical analysis revealed a significant decreased absorbed dose in the thyroid in the iohexol group. This decreased uptake was not accompanied by an decreased effective half-life of the radioiodine. The variation of inter-individual RAIU decreased in this group and more homogenous absorbed doses were obtained. No significant difference in outcome could be demonstrated. However, a tendency towards a higher number of residual hyperthyroidism in the iohexol group was noted (15 versus 6% in control group). This study demonstrates that iohexol interferes with the uptake of radioiodine in the hyperthyroid cat but does not provoke increased turnover. In this study, albeit including a small number of cats, outcome did not seem to be significantly affected. 相似文献
Objective— To evaluate the effect of preoperative intrathecal administration of a low dose of morphine on intraoperative fentanyl requirements in dogs undergoing cervical and thoracolumbar spinal surgery. Study Design— Prospective randomized clinical study. Animals— Dogs (n=18) matched by surgical procedure administered intrathecal morphine (MG) or no-treatment (control group, CG). Methods— After premedication with romifidine (4 μg/kg, intravenously) and induction with propofol, anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane in oxygen. Intrathecal morphine 0.03 (0.023–0.034) mg/kg was administered at lumbar level 41 (25–65) minutes before surgery in MG. Ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) was administered hourly, starting before incision. Fentanyl infusion (1.2 and 4.2 μg/kg/h in MG and CG, respectively) was administered after a loading dose (5 and 10 μg/kg in MG and CG, respectively), and boluses were given if an increase >20% in heart rate and arterial blood pressure was observed. Total amount of fentanyl administered was recorded, to calculate hourly requirements and predict plasma concentration using a computer simulation. Results— Hourly fentanyl consumption and predicted plasma concentrations at the time of response to surgery were significantly lower in MG compared with CG. Conclusions— Preoperative administration of a low dose of intrathecal morphine has a sparing effect on intraoperative fentanyl requirements. Clinical Relevance— Preoperative intrathecal administration of a low dose of morphine at the lumbar level represented a safe and effective mean of providing intraoperative analgesia in dogs undergoing cervical and thoracolumbar spinal surgery. 相似文献
The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between phenols and graft incompatibility in Uapaca kirkiana. Phenol quantification and identification were carried out using Folin-Ciocalteau reagent procedure, fluorescence microscopy and reverse phase high performance liquid chromatograph (RP-HPLC) above, below and at the graft union. Results showed no vascular cambium continuity above the scion/stock unions. Significant differences in total soluble phenols and cell wall bound phenols were obtained. Fluorescence microscope indicated the presence of flavonoids and other polymers above the union. The RP-HPLC identified ferulic acid as a major phenol component found in U. kirkiana plant cells and responsible for wood discolouration. High phenol concentrations were obtained in less compatible combinations than in compatible combinations. High peaks of ρ-coumaric acid were obtained above the union. It is concluded that phenols, especially ρ-coumaric acids and flavonoids caused poor callus formation at the union, and hence implicated in graft incompatibility. 相似文献
